University of Southern California (USC) Trojans, established in 1880, is the oldest teaching and independent research universities in the West. Los Angeles was a rough frontier town in the 1870s, when Judge Robert Maclay Widney and other enlightened citizens dreamed of a university in the region. Widney 1879 formed a board of directors and received a donation of 308 lots of land from three prominent members of the community – Ozro W. Childs, a Protestant horticulturist, former California Governor John G. Downey, an Irish Catholic pharmacist and businessman, and Isaiah W. Hellman, a German Jewish banker and philanthropist. The gift provided land for a campus and a source of endowment funds, seed funding for USC nascent institution in 1880 and opened its doors to 53 students and 10 teachers.

USC has one of the richest histories of university sport. The Trojans are the men's athletic teams, "while women" sports teams are called "Women of Troy." The Trojans have won 109 total team national championships, of which 89 are national championships NCAA, 87 of which were won by teams of men and 22 women. The Trojans athletes have won 296 individual NCAA titles, more than any other school in the nation and the women of Troy took home another crown of 51 NCAA 347 individual medley championship in the NCAA.

USC has a reputation and long tradition of feeding Olympic athletes. 375 Trojan athletes compete in 1904 Summer Olympics until 2004, taking home a record 112 gold medals, over received at least 1 gold in every summer Olympics since 1912, 64 silver and 58 bronze. There Trojans for the Olympic Games than any other university in the world. In fact, if USC were its own nation in the Olympics, would be tied at 11 in the world gold medals in total. In the Athens Games in 2004, USC sent 35 athletes won 17 medals.

The Trojan football team has won 11 national titles and in 2007 was tied with Notre Dame and Ohio State to win the Heisman Trophy more with 7. From 1959 to 2008, the Trojans had won the conference championship 18 times and tied for the title 6 times. USC was the fourth best dish of the nation winning percentage (, 643) among the 65 schools who took at least 10 bowl appearances and 30 appearances in Rose Bowl is an all-time best.

Victoria Bell Bell is 295 pounds and lifted a locomotive and the rivalry trophy in the USC-UCLA rivalry-cross the city. The winner of the annual football contest keeps the bell for the next year, and the paintings of the color: red blood from the USC-UCLA True Blue. The bell was given to students at UCLA in 1939, and initially it sounded when the cheerleaders the Bruins scored. However, in the opening game at UCLA in 1941, six of USC Trojan Knights infiltrated the Bruin rooting section, assisted in loading the bell aboard a truck returned to Westwood took the key from the truck and ran off with the bell, while real fans went to UCLA a replacement key. They hid the UCLA bell for over a year. Tension between UCLA and USC students rose as each started making more elaborate tricks and disturbing the others. The rivalry became so bad that the President threatened to cancel the USC.
