Ole Miss gave me a short time in his ongoing project to catalog the history of all graduates of our beloved university. What a humbling to be included in the same book, with soils of the athletes who once applauded and intellectual giants, I'm still amazed.
What could I say to illustrate to young graduates in search of May, perhaps in vain, for the wisdom of those of us who are closer to the end of the journey of life that beginning?
Should I tell them of my success and fortune in business and politics, or perhaps recite all the rights of grants, honors and appointments? Without doubt, be aware of all the rich and famous have known?
No, I have to with urgency and clarity that we all face relentless pressure the world to adapt to shape the world to be assimilated by the collective rights. Take heart young rebels, for Star Trek fans know, Resistance is not futile.
Reject the insistence of the crowd at the position in practice and pragmatism over moral absolutes. Rejecting the "simplicity" They offer this side of the complexity. Search and strive for simplicity and truth of the other side of complexity. This is to find peace and strength for the battles he faces in the temporal world – knowing that is right with God. All else is vanity, a steam to be swept away by the inexorable advance of time.
Do not look for a Messiah born to the world of think tanks. Our Messiah was born in a manger. Do not look for a savior in the halls of Congress or American companies. Our Savior is located at the cross. Do not look for him the great cathedrals, mega church, or political savvy among the prophets of prosperity.
You will find heartbroken, abandoned, the poor spirit of seeking wealth, and those with a faith that loves, serves and saves.
The only message that could incorporate a Time Capsule is Ole Miss once and for all peoples. The world uses, the abuse you and throw you. "I never leave nor forsake thee.
Take up your cross and follow Jesus Christ.
