Football and athletics has always seemed to be a "patch" at Georgia Tech education and striving for excellence has always been a priority of Technology Georgia.
"I spoil a Ramblin 'Georgia Tech and a hell of engineer. A Lovely, Lovely, Lovely, Lovely, hell of an engineer. "
These words of one of America's most famous battle song typical of the spirit of athletics at Georgia Tech, a school with a plant and tradition in college athletics.
Since 1892, when the first football team was organized in the flats, Georgia Tech teams in all sports represented the Institute in an outstanding manner to produce some of the biggest names in athletics. Tech has won four national football championships in the years 1917, 1928, 1952 and 1990. Football teams have the Yellow Jacket one of the best records in the nation in bowl games at 22-14. During last 100 years, Tech has had 12 football coaches: John Heisman, Bill Alexander, Bobby Dodd, Bud Carson, Bill Fulcher, Pepper Rodgers, Bill Curry, Bobby Ross, Bill Lewis, George O'Leary, Chan Gailey and the current coach, Paul Johnson.
In the fall of 1891, before Georgia Tech organized a football team of its own, a game was scheduled between Auburn and Georgia. Due to the rivalry established in baseball games between technology and Georgia (which is still strong after 100 years), students at the university were invited to applaud the game, of course, of Auburn. In a mass meeting, students were appointed a committee to recommend colors to be used and the cheers that are used in the game. The Committee suggested white and gold, and about 200 students attended the game using the school colors for the first time.
In 1893, when the Tech football team played its first official game against Georgia, a group of young women Cobb Institute, Lucy girls, dressed in white and gold, attended the game to cheer for Tech These ladies were among the first Tech fans to show their loyalty by using colors and traditional.

A What is clear, however, is that the nickname does not leave what is familiar six-legged insect, but the insect mascot, known as "Buzz" grew out of that nickname.
As can be determined, the first reference to that university students as "Yellowjackets" appeared in the Constitution Atlanta in 1905 and became common usage at that time.
Historians say the name written as one word was first used to describe to supporters who attended Tech athletic events, with yellow vests and jackets. The actual mascot was conceived at a later date.
Other common nicknames teams have asked the engineers at Georgia Tech, which is still used by some authors, Tech, the first nickname known to have been abandoned around 1910, and blacksmiths, that was common between 1902 and 1904.
