What a good lens to take pictures of the football team for young people?

My wife is going to take some pictures of youth soccer This year is a great lens for taking photographs of individuals, but not sure if it works for the team photo. I forgot his camera is a Canon Digital Rebel XTi

I just want to use a plain o'l lens in a series with the first phase Blad back. Oh, and be sure to use a tripod!
