Facts about Football

Just know Auburn – the city, the University, and tradition – to truly understand Auburn Football and what it really means. I'll try to explain. . .

My earliest memories of Auburn are from about 1955. I remember walking down College Street from my aunt's house, with lemonade and a grilled cheese sandwich in the counter drug store lunch Toomer, then go to Tiger Theater (w) and see "Gone With the Wind." I have very fond memories of summers in Auburn. So I understand what it means to be not only a fan of Auburn, Alabama, but Auburn Tigers!

Auburn Football is one of the stories more stories, not just in the "South Deep ", but in all of college football.'s Start with the oldest rivalry in the Deep South football and athletics in college. Auburn and Georgia Released February 20, 1892 at Piedmont Park in Atlanta! Since 1898, the Auburn Tigers have played the Georgia Bulldogs every year! Who is 111 Competition Total (Auburn not a soccer field team in the war years from 1943), with Auburn leading the series 53-50-8. Another first for Auburn football was the first LTTE Bowl. The Bacardi Cup is the bowl game ever played outside the United States. New Year's Day in 1937, Auburn and Villanova have struggled to tie a 7-7 in Havana, Cuba!

Another unique element of Auburn football for many years has been in games were played. The main rivals from Auburn, Georgia, Tennessee, Georgia Tech, and Alabama, not come to play in "most games pretty village of the plain." Auburn "home" with these schools have played in Atlanta, Montgomery, Mobile, Columbus, Macon, Savannah, or Birmingham! Finally, in 1960, things began to change. In 1960, Georgia came to Auburn and lost 9-6. In 1970, Georgia Tech went south to Auburn and lost 31-7. In 1974, Tennessee came to Auburn and lost 21-0. And the Crimson Tide of Alabama came to Auburn for the first time in 1974, losing 30-20. These victories proved that Auburn finally could enjoy a "Home" game!

Does not matter if you call the Tigers, the llanos, and eagles of war all have the same meaning. . . Auburn! The Tiger is both the nickname and mascot! "Ranger" refers to the city of Auburn, "most beautiful villages of the plain" both references are from a poem by Oliver Goldsmith (the people "abandoned", published in 1770) "War Eagle" is at once the cry of war and hello.

War Eagle, of course, is based on a legend that ties a wounded eagle to a wounded Confederate soldier. The bird was rescued by a soldier. It raises the eagle, while a student at Auburn, and eventually became a faculty member. The two were there that day, Auburn and Georgia played in Piedmont Park. When Auburn scored the first touchdown the old eagle broke free and floated above the earth! Auburn people looked at the familiar figure and cried "War Eagle". At the end of the game, the eagle collapsed and died, he had given everything for the win at Auburn. The eagle may have died, but his spirit lives in the hearts of Auburn fans everywhere.

Tradition and pride continue to "fuel" Auburn football. John Heisman, the legendary coach for the honor of top college football is called, has coached at Auburn 1895-1899 and a record of 12-4-2. Auburn is the only school where he trained have Heisman Heisman Trophy winner. Auburn has two: quarterback Pat Sullivan won the award in 1971 and runner Bo Jackson won the honor in 1985.

The long tradition Auburn Football includes national championships, undefeated seasons, and many, many familiar names in college football to remember, but this is only the beginning! Whether you win or lose, tradition and pride will be felt forever Auburn in Auburn and the famous cry: "Eagles Waaarrrrr!
